Gmail Enters the Gemini Era with AI Overviews and Inbox Q&A
Google has officially announced a major transformation for Gmail, bringing it deeper into the Gemini AI ecosystem. The company revealed several new AI-powered features aimed at helping users manage email more efficiently in 2026.
One of the key additions is AI Overviews, which can automatically summarise long email threads into concise key points. This feature also enables users to ask Gmail natural language questions such as:
“Who was the plumber who sent me a quote last year?” — with Gemini extracting relevant information directly from past emails.
Google confirmed that conversation summaries via AI Overviews are rolling out to all users at no cost. However, the advanced inbox Q&A feature will remain exclusive to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
These features are powered by Gemini 3, with the rollout currently starting in the US and English language support first.
