EC2 Image Builder integrates with Auto Scaling Groups for improved efficiency
EC2 Image Builder now integrates with Auto Scaling Groups, allowing faster image builds by utilizing existing instances and avoiding new instance launches.
Amazon’s EC2 Image Builder now offers integration with Auto Scaling Groups (ASG), significantly enhancing the speed of image builds by utilizing existing instances. This new capability allows users to bypass the time-consuming process of launching and bootstrapping new instances, opting instead to use already operational EC2 instances.
With this integration, users can specify an ASG within their Image Builder infrastructure setup. During the image building process, Image Builder will select an instance that is already running from the specified ASG, apply the necessary build components, and then create the image. The ASG is designed to automatically replenish its pool of instances as they are employed for builds, ensuring a constant availability of instances for future pipeline executions.
This feature is entirely optional and does not impact existing pipelines that do not have an ASG configured. Those pipelines will continue to operate using the default instance launch process without any changes in behavior.
Available in all AWS Regions at no additional cost, this feature can be configured by consulting the EC2 Image Builder documentation, which provides detailed instructions on integrating ASGs into your Image Builder pipelines.
