Amazon SageMaker enhances metadata and governance with IAM-based domains

Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio now offers enhanced metadata and governance features for IAM-based domains, enabling business-specific information and automated metadata generation.

Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio has introduced new capabilities to support business context, metadata, and data governance within IAM-based domains. This enhancement allows users to enrich their AWS Glue Data Catalog tables with business-specific information, such as business names, detailed descriptions, and README documentation. By leveraging AI-generated metadata, businesses can automate the generation of business names and descriptions, simplifying the cataloging process for extensive datasets.

Additionally, this update enables the creation of business glossaries, ensuring that all teams within an organization use standardized definitions for common terms like “ARR” or “churn rate.” Users can also define metadata form templates to consistently capture structured information, including data classification, retention policies, and ownership details.

With these business context features, data engineers, analysts, and data scientists can efficiently search and discover tables across the entire domain. They can filter search results using glossary terms and metadata form fields, and request access to data through a subscription model. Once an administrator approves a request, SageMaker Unified Studio automatically assigns the necessary AWS Lake Formation permissions to the project. Administrators also have the option to grant access to tables directly within SageMaker Unified Studio without the need for a formal request.

These new business context, metadata, and governance capabilities in IAM-based domains are available across all AWS Regions that support SageMaker Unified Studio. For further details, users are encouraged to consult the Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio documentation.
