Reuters’ X account in India withheld “in response to legal demand”
The official X (formerly Twitter) account of international news agency Reuters has been withheld in India following a “legal demand,” as confirmed by the platform.
When Indian users attempted to access @Reuters on X on Saturday night, they were met with a message stating: “@Reuters has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand.”
As of now, Reuters has not issued an official statement explaining the circumstances behind the blocking of its account in India or the nature of the legal request.
Reuters, which is the news and media division of Thomson Reuters, is one of the world’s largest and most respected news agencies. It operates with a team of around 2,600 journalists across more than 200 locations worldwide, delivering news to newspapers, broadcasters, and digital platforms globally.
While the primary @Reuters account remains inaccessible in India, other affiliated handles — including Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, and regional pages — continue to function normally in the country.
According to X’s policy, content or accounts can be withheld in a specific country if required by a valid legal request, such as a court order, or in response to local laws and regulations.
It remains unclear whether the restriction on Reuters’ account is temporary or permanent. The incident comes amid rising scrutiny and legal action against social media platforms and content publishers in India, where authorities have tightened rules around digital content and compliance in recent years.
