Aws License Manager introduces license type conversions for Ubuntu Pro

AWS License Manager now supports in-place upgrades of EC2 Ubuntu LTS instances to Ubuntu Pro, enhancing security and compliance without the need for infrastructure changes.

AWS License Manager now offers support for in-place upgrades of EC2 Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) instances to Ubuntu Pro, which is available through the AWS Marketplace. This new capability enables customers to enhance their security measures and comply with regulations without the need to rebuild their infrastructure or migrate workloads to a new instance or Amazon Machine Image (AMI).

Ubuntu Pro subscriptions provide security patches for up to 10 years, with the option to extend this coverage to 15 years using the Legacy add-on. This extensive support not only covers the base operating system but also includes thousands of additional packages. Among these are widely utilized open-source applications such as NGINX, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Redis. Furthermore, Ubuntu Pro incorporates Kernel Livepatch, allowing critical kernel security updates to be applied without the need for a system reboot, thereby reducing downtime.

With this update, customers who already possess a Canonical Ubuntu Pro subscription via AWS Marketplace can directly upgrade during the conversion process. Those without a current subscription can easily subscribe to Canonical Ubuntu Pro through the AWS License Manager console. This feature is now accessible in all commercial regions where AWS License Manager is available.

To begin utilizing this new feature, users can visit the AWS License Manager console and refer to the AWS License Manager User Guide for further instructions.
