Amazon Opens First Drone Delivery Hub in India

In a landmark move, Amazon India has inaugurated its first drone delivery hub near Bengaluru, offering limited drone deliveries for groceries and medical supplies in suburban regions. The quadcopter drones can carry up to 2kg of payload with an automated air-drop system, reaching drop zones within a 5km radius in under 10 minutes. Amazon claims flight paths are geo-fenced to avoid restricted zones, and AI-based obstacle detection ensures safety.

This initiative is initially available to a select pilot community, with plans to expand to other cities later in 2025. Amazon reports that drone delivery cuts typical delivery times by half and significantly reduces road emissions. The project has received provisional approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), though permanent licensing remains pending final regulatory clearance. Once scaled, Amazon India aims to position drone delivery as a key differentiator in its logistics network.
